Stem mastering involves using seperated stems to hone in on certain aspects of a track more easily. Stem mastering is used when you need more control over certain elements within the mix. I will always let a client know if its better to master using stems before we start. As this takes longer than stereo mastering its slightly more expensive, but usually worth it.
